Past Winners at SKIP City International D-Cinema Festival
Win Awards at Cannes Film Festival and Academy Awards
Established in 2004, the SKIP City International D-Cinema Festival (organized by Saitama Prefecture, Kawaguchi City, and SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTVIAL Committee and others) aims to discover the next generation of filmmakers exploring new possibility for digital expression and support the development of new kind of audio-visual industry and this year marks the 8th edition. We are very pleased to announce that the past two winners at our festival were recently awarded respectively with the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival and the Best Foreign Language Film at Academy Awards this year.
Grand Jury Prize – The 64th Cannes Film Festival
Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan – Winner of Best Picture at the Feature Length Competition in 2007
Nuri Bilge Ceylan from Turkey who won the Best Picture at the 4th edition of our festival won the Grand Jury Prize at the 64th Cannes Film Festival this year with his latest “Once Upon A Time In Anatolia /BIR ZAMANLAR ANADOLU’DA”. “Climates / Iklimler”, which Ceylan wrote, directed, and starred in, portrays the psychology of a couple on the verge of a breakdown. Interweaving beautiful landscapes in different seasons, the film was praised for its evocative depiction of adult relationships. Though none of his films have been theatrically distributed in Japan, Ceylan was awarded the Grand Jury Prize twice at Cannes Film Festival as well as the FIPRESCI Prize and the Best Director.
Best Foreign Language Film - The 83rd Academy Awards
Director Susanne Bier – Winner of Best Picture at the Feature Length Competition in 2005
Susanne Bier from Denmark won the Best Picture at the 2nd edition of our festival for Brothers and her new film “In A Better World” won the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards this February. “Brothers / Brondre” is a touching portrait of human relationship and it was remade in Hollywood with the same title in 2009. Bier continues to direct critically acclaimed films and with her new film “In A Better World”, she hits her career high with the Oscar under her belt. The film is distributed by Long Ride and scheduled to open at Toho Cinemas Chante on August 13th with the national roll out to follow.
