Kijima is thinking of making a film about a woman who sweeps a high school sports field at night, but hasn’t been able to get anywhere with the script. One day, he falls for a new coworker of his, named Matsuzaka, and he sets out to write the screenplay with her in mind. Through the clumsy interactions between these socially awkward individuals we feel the touch of writer, director, and editor Taiyo Kuroyanagi. The woman sweeping may be traced to the woman riding a scooter in his previous film, Scooter, each serving as a source of inspiration for the respective protagonists. The synchronized footsteps of Kijima and Matsuzaka, sweeping the field under the dim light of the night, perfectly captures the relationship of the pair, creating a unique dynamism in the film. Matsuzaka-san will have its world premiere at the festival.

When wondering what kind of person someone is, I think the reason that seeing their name tag brings a sense of relief is that a name is one answer that every single one of us has. But isn’t it strange that we can feel like we know someone just because we know their name? I made this film determined that next time, I’ll say, “I want to get to know you, and I want you to know about me.”
