Feature Length Competition

Feature Length Competition is open to theatrical feature films over 70 minutes shot on digital by directors with less than 3 feature film credits from all over the world. This year, we have received close to 600 submissions from 84 countries and regions. After a preliminary judging, 12 films are nominated. Enjoy the new crop of films directed by exciting new talent.

Short Length Competition

This category aims to discover the next generation of filmmakers in Japan. The accepted length is set at more than 15 minutes and less than 30 minutes. We have received over 150 submissions this year and 12 shorts are nominated.

Current D-Cinema 2013

This year’s opening film is A Sparkle of Life, the 4th project supported by the D-MAP program managed by SKIP CITY Sai-no-kuni Visual Plaza. This is the first feature film by Bunji Sotoyama, who won an award at the SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-Cinema FESTIVAL 2007 and whose short film was a critical success worldwide and screened at the festival. The festival celebrates the 10th anniversary and opens with Sotoyama’s debut feature-length film.

■The 10th Anniversary Special Programs

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-Cinema FESTIVAL and we have put together three special programs to celebrate. “Focus on Rotterdam” offers a look at one of the most innovative international film festivals held annually in Rotterdam. “New Films by Past Nominees” features new films by the festival graduates and “Your Best 3 Shorts” features three short films voted online by the audience. Enjoy these exciting films that can only be seen at the festival!

Focus on Rotterdam

A special program offers a look at International Film Festival Rotterdam, a world-renowned festival known for being a steppingstone for emerging filmmakers around the world. The program screens three festival hits from its last edition and features a talk session with the festival’s Japanese film programmer.

New Films by Past Nominees

Many emerging filmmakers whose works had previously competed at the festival have moved on to become auteurs in high demand at international festivals. We proudly present new films by the festival graduates who have grown to be recognized as filmmakers of indisputable talent.

Online Shorts Award and Screening

9 short films, screened in the past three editions and selected by the festival director, compete online. The top 3 films will be announced and screened at the festival this year on the big screen.
