Birth-Weaving Life

The mysterious cycle of life is the central theme of this documentary animation about birth, a subject difficult to depict in the live action format. Three animators depict the experiences of three different female animation filmmakers.

Director:Chie Arai
Since 2002, Arai has worked as a freelance animator and illustrator on various animations. On the side, she produces flipbooks, picture books, and videos.
Director: Atsuko Koguma
Koguma directs and produces various animation commercials and videos. She also makes puppets and works as an illustrator on various projects. She is often a guest speaker at various workshops and seminars that promote artistic animations and the industry at large.
Director: Arisa Wakami
Wakami is an animation artist whose works include Blessing (2011), a stop motion animation, and sand painting animation works. She also works as an instructor on various animation workshops for children and seminars that introduce seashells and wool as materials to create animation. She is a Director at Child Pokke.

Aoko is an ordinary employee at a company that doesn’t appreciate her. One day, she witnesses the documents she produced being replaced by her colleague who turns her into a candy. The animation utilizes a plastic plate as a candy, creating adorable imagery.

Born 1992 in Tokyo, Misato graduated from the Visual Communication Design Department at Musashino Art University. He is now attending the Animation Department at the Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts.

Miyuki is a shy girl who is not good at socializing. Her only friend is an imaginary friend named Techi-techi. A story about an encounter that Miyuki experiences. The use of pastel color creates a refreshingly nostalgic atmosphere.

Director: Akie Ishii
Born in Saitama, Ishii became interested in animation when she was in the 5th grade. After entering Kyoto Seika University, her independent work produced in her freshman year won an award at Osaka CM Award. This is her thesis animation and she is currently working at an animation production company.
I Think You're a Little Confused

One day, a letter arrives to blood sausage and it decides to visit the house of liver sausage. Based on folklore, this critically acclaimed stop motion animation depicts a surreal and dark world with detail and humor.

Born in Tokyo, Ogawa works in animation, illustration, stereolithography. He currently works at an animation production company.
Momo and Her Cat

Momo and Myu the cat are old friends and irreplaceable family members. But Myu ages much faster than Momo. This heartwarming short animation with gentle sensibility depicts a girl whose encounter with a cat thrusts her into adulthood.

Director: Yuka Imabayashi
After studying oil painting, Imabayashi studied animation at the Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts. She now works as an animation director and illustrator on a variety of programs at NHK targeted at various age groups.
Takeda Station Memories

Takeda Station, where Shimiko used to visit with her mother when she was a child, has shut down. Shimiko decides to build an altar for the station and makes a wish to the elephant in the park to see the station again. The director reflects back on her own memory of Takeda Station in this infectiously joyous animation.

Hamamura graduated from Kyoto Seika University in March 2017. She produces animation, manga, and illustration works. In 2016, a solo exhibition of her work was held in Kyoto.
The Ancestor

A man wakes up to the voice of someone calling him. When he opens his eyes, he sees a young man from the year 3022. His future descendant is paying him a visit for advice. This hand drawn animation depicts a mysterious world with a dose of black humor.

Director: Seiji O’Hara
O’Hara directs films and hand drawn animation works. His short animation Ori no naka no gingu (2013) won an award at a film festival in Russia. He is currently working on his next project.
The Interpreter

The history, legends, and folklore of Derby, a city that flourished as an industrial city is told by a Japanese director based in London using collages of old etchings, photographs, tarots, and various other materials, forming complex layers.

Okaku studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art, completing an MA in Animation. She became a freelancer in 2009 and since then has worked on short animations and audio visual performance pieces.
The Outgrowth

A woman wakes up one morning and finds a boil on her forehead. One day, the moon explodes and disappears. There’s a man who lives with the woman. A dog on the sidewalk watches the woman walking by. The boil keeps getting bigger. This humble pencil drawn animation tells a bizarre story with a unique edge.

Born 1992 in Kumamoto, Morinaga graduated from the Design Department at Tokyo University of Art. He is currently attending the Animation Department at the Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts.
White Home Town

One shows dedication while the other relies on dedication. All life forms survive this way. With delicate sensibility, this stop motion animation tells a story about a lamp that offers unconditional love and a wolf that refuses to accept it.
