Felipe, who takes acting classes behind his mother’s back, is told by the teacher that his father was an actor. Given the opportunity for a film audition, he goes to meet his grandmother, with whom he lost contact after his father’s death.

The story is simple, about a boy who retraces the life of his dead father, but director Pablo Solarz’s artistry makes it a masterpiece, evoking steadily rising emotions as the film moves toward its peak. I Woke Up with a Dream had its international premiere at Berlin International Film Festival Generation section, and won the Special Jury Critics' Award at the Malaga Film Festival, which features Spanish-language films. Solarz, who previously participated in the festival in 2018 with The Last Suit, is the first non-Japanese director selected for the International Competition twice in the festival’s 20-year history. The film overwhelmingly won the Audience Award, leaving many viewers in tears, and became a smash hit when it was commercially released in cinemas. I Woke Up with a Dream, with the sweet Lucas Ferro as Felipe, will also surely be well-received.

Solarz is a screenwriter, film director, actor, and teacher. He graduated from Drama School of Buenos Aires and studied filmmaking at Columbia College Chicago. Screenwriter of Minimal Stories (02), A Boyfriend for My Wife (08), I Married a Dumbass (16) and others. He made his first feature as a director Together Forever (11) and then directed The Last Suit (17). His film I Woke Up with a Dream (22) premiered at the 73rd Berlinale Generation Kplus and won the Special Jury Critics' Award at the 26th Malaga IFF.

It’s a big honor and pleasure to be part of SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-Cinema FESTIVAL 2023 with I Woke Up with a Dream, a film made with a lot of love in La Paloma and Montevideo, Uruguay, in times of confinement for pandemic reasons. The story we are telling, the emotions we try to share, came originally from Lucas Ferro’s creativity. Being only twelve years old, he works very hard during a summer screenwriting workshop, shaping the story that I’ve later turned into a script. For me this was never a project because it’s started to happen naturally and it never stopped until we got to the final version of the film. I feel very glad sharing this collective work with you, inviting you to get to know the plot and, specially, the atmosphere, the wind, the sound of the sea and the rhythm of life in La Paloma, a very small and quit village at the far North East of Uruguay, a small country where I was not born but I have chosen for only one reason: love.
