Winny depicts how Isamu Kaneko, a software developer with the username of 47, was arrested on charges of aiding and abetting copyright infringement, and how his attorneys went to court to confront the police and prosecutors, claiming that the arrest was unjust. Technology developed by a computer genius was abolished by state authorities; the attorneys fight the authorities and the mass media to protect the developer’s rights and future. The story is based on true incidents. Masahiro Higashide plays the role of Winny developer Isamu Kaneko. He held a mock trial with a practicing attorney before the shooting, and gained 18kg to make his character look as real as possible. The director is Yusaku Matsumoto, whose self-funded film Noise (18) was acclaimed at international film festivals, and who made his commercial film debut with It’s All My Fault (22). Having depicted ordinary people living in the harsh realities of society, he sympathized Kaneko’s ideas and decided to make this film after thorough research.
