Photographer Masashi Asada took unique photographs of his family of four — father, mother, brother and himself — who did various cosplay under the themes “what they wanted to be” and “what they want to do together”. His photobook, “The Asadas”, contains family portraits in which they threw themselves into the roles of firefighters, yakuza and so on; the book received the 34th Kimura Ihei Award, a prestigious photography award in Japan. The film The Asadas is inspired by that book, and “Album no chikara”, about the over-two-year experience when he was a volunteer, cleaning photos covered with mud from the Great East Japan Earthquake tsunami, returning the cleaned photos to the owners. The screenplay and its unique viewpoint is the work of director Ryota Nakano, whose Her Love Boils Bathwater (16) swept film awards that year, including the 41st Hochi Film Awards Best Picture, and won the nominations for the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
