In a rural Chinese village, the quiet life of Lao Yang, a retired shadow puppeteer, is disrupted when his son shows up unannounced with an American fiancée and her six year old son from a previous marriage. The son and his fiancée take off soon after and Lao Yang is left to take care of the child who is different in language, culture, and everything else.

Jiang-tao Qu graduated from the Xinjiang Institute of the Arts in 1998 and went on to study directing at the Beijing Film Academy. After graduating there in 2003, he served as a cinematographer in “Yao Ming and Children Affected by HIV/AIDS” (TV documentary), and The Blood of Yingzhou District, a winner of the 2007 Academy Awards Documentary Short Subject category, and a feature documentary film, Shanghai Exodus. In 2012, Qu directed his first feature, Grandson from America, which became a hit in China. His second feature film is Love Deposit (2013), which opened in China this spring.
