The 10th Anniversary Special Programs

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-Cinema FESTIVAL and we have put together three special programs to celebrate. “Focus on Rotterdam” offers a look at one of the most innovative international film festivals held annually in Rotterdam. “New Films by Past Nominees” features new films by the festival graduates and “Your Best 3 Shorts” features three short films voted online by the audience. Enjoy these exciting films that can only be seen at the festival!

Focus on Rotterdam

A special program offers a look at International Film Festival Rotterdam, a world-renowned festival known for being a steppingstone for emerging filmmakers around the world. The program screens three festival hits from its last edition and features a talk session with the festival’s Japanese film programmer.

Director/Daniel Hoesl

Born 1982, Hoesl lives and works in Vienna, Austria. He worked as Assistant Director on Ulrich Seidl‘s Paradise Trilogy. Hoesl is interested in radical concepts, in a narrative and aesthetic way. He is founder of the production company/film collective A European Film Conspiracy, with which he made Soldate Jeannette, his feature debut. He also directed short films such as The Madness of the Day (2011), Lektion von alltäglichem Pathos (2006) and Lektion in Tango (2004).

Ronnie has done all the bad things in the world and then some more. One day, he survives a brutal attack and wakes up a changed man. The film features striking visuals to tell a story of people caught up in a web of destiny.

Born 1962 in Amsterdam, Driel graduated in history and is a self-taught graphic artist. He works as an illustrator for several newspapers and magazines. He has published several graphic novels and made a short documentary U Are Speaking with Frank Laufer (2000) and a short film Green is Still the Nicest Color for Grass (2007). The Resurrection of a Bastard, based on his graphic novel, is his feature debut.

Issues of modern China come into focus through the struggles of a middle-class wife

Fang Lei lives in Beijing with her husband and daughter leading a happy life. Everything seems fine. But in her dreams, she encounters a man who at first acts violent but then eventually seductive. She is scared in the beginning, but becomes intrigued as her encounters escalate into a passionate love affair.

Born 1972 in China, Yang graduated from the People’s Liberation Army Institute of the Arts in 1995. She then danced and acted in numerous ballets, theater plays and feature films, including Jia Zhangke’s Platform (2000). She started to work as an independent documentary filmmaker and her first documentary film, Old Men (2009) about the daily life and loneliness of her old neighbors was acclaimed internationally. Longing for the Rain is her first fictional film.

 

 

Talk Session

Gertjan ZuilhofInternational Film Festival Rotterdam is known for its comprehensive support for up-and-coming filmmakers. We invite Gertjan Zuilhof, who is in charge of programming Japanese films at the festival, along with the Japanese filmmakers whose films screened at Rotterdam, to discuss how the festival has managed to become the hotspot to discover new talents of the world.
